Longitudinal trends of future climate change and oil palm growth: empirical evidence for tropical Africa

نویسندگان

چکیده

Palms are highly significant tropical plants. Oil palms produce palm oil, the basic commodity of a important industry. Climate change from greenhouse gasses is likely to decrease ability survive, irrespective them providing ecosystem services communities. Little information about species survival in regions under climate available and data on migration important. particularly Africa: oil industry already exists with Nigeria being largest producer. Previous work using CLIMEX modelling indicated that Africa will have reduced suitable for Africa. The current paper employs this assess how growing changed time 2100. An increasing trend west east was observed indicating refuges could be obtained along African belt. Most countries had climates but others increased, Uganda high. There may case developing future plantations towards usefully applied other palms. However, it crucial any developments fully adhere environmental regulations. Future severe consequences cultivation there scope eastwards mitigation

Climate change effects on economic growth: mixed empirical evidence

West Africa is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This paper analyzed the impacts of climate change on economic growth in Anglophone West Africa with similar background, during the periods 1969-2016. Five growth model equations have been developed to incorporate climate change variables into the model. Panel data estimations such as the fixed effect model, random effect model and Haus...

Climate change affecting oil palm agronomy, and oil palm cultivation increasing climate change, require amelioration

Palm oil is used in various valued commodities and is a large global industry worth over US$ 50 billion annually. Oil palms (OP) are grown commercially in Indonesia and Malaysia and other countries within Latin America and Africa. The large-scale land-use change has high ecological, economic, and social impacts. Tropical countries in particular are affected negatively by climate change (CC) whi...

Remotely sensed evidence of tropical peatland conversion to oil palm.

Rising global demands for food and biofuels are driving forest clearance in the tropics. Oil-palm expansion contributes to biodiversity declines and carbon emissions in Southeast Asia. However, the magnitudes of these impacts remain largely unquantified until now. We produce a 250-m spatial resolution map of closed canopy oil-palm plantations in the lowlands of Peninsular Malaysia (2 million ha...

Kilimanjaro ice core records: evidence of holocene climate change in tropical Africa.

Six ice cores from Kilimanjaro provide an approximately 11.7-thousand-year record of Holocene climate and environmental variability for eastern equatorial Africa, including three periods of abrupt climate change: approximately 8.3, approximately 5.2, and approximately 4 thousand years ago (ka). The latter is coincident with the "First Dark Age," the period of the greatest historically recorded ...

Climate change. Can we detect trends in extreme tropical cyclones?

process may not have been so smooth as initially thought, and numerical simulations performed by Tsiganis et al. (4) show that the passage of Jupiter and Saturn through a 2:1 resonance may have ignited a period of strong chaotic evolution of Uranus and Neptune. In this scenario, the two planets had frequent close encounters and may even have exchanged orbits before their eccentricities finally ...
